In the business of maligning India.

There was a strange question on Quora recently: Is India becoming the most hated country?

It reminded me of the years after Nirbhaya’s rape and murder, when a massive campaign was launched worldwide to portray Indian men as rapists. It was so massive that it reached not only local papers in Germany and probably everywhere else, but a local paper in Nuremberg dedicated half a page to her memory even one year AFTER it had happened.  The impact of this campaign was extraordinarily “successful” if one could use this term:  in March 2015 a biochemistry professor at the University of Leipzig refused admission to her course to an Indian student because of India’s “rape problem”. It even turned out that this was not the only case.

Since this campaign started soon after the news about the Rotherham grooming gangs of mainly Pakistani men came out in the open, I wondered if the questioner wanted to know how well the business of maligning India had progressed and if India is on the way of becoming the most hated country.

Here is my reply:

Oh no, India can never become the most hated country – never mind how much media and missionaries and other vested interests try to portray it as such.

There are too many people in the world who know India, who know her profound philosophy, who know how much she has contributed to civilization, more than any other country in this world, who know how kind and open-minded her people are, how they live and let live and this includes millions of Cow, monkeys, stray dogs, even tigers, leopards, elephants, snakes, etc… in spite of a huge population on little space.

Too many people know how colourful and joyful the atmosphere is during the many festivals, which have mostly a religious nature, they know how alive the country is and how generously India shares her knowledge like Yoga or Ayurveda, how amazing her culture is – music, dance, sculpture, architecture. And also, there are too many people who know Indians who live abroad and know that they are among the best immigrants possible.

But yes, attempts are on to portray India in very poor light, and ‘rapes in India’ and ‘atrocities against minorities’ are preferred news on foreign TV channels, like on German dw (Deutsche Welle) or BBC, when the same channels will not broadcast rapes that happen in Germany or Britain.

A poll in England recently showed that Indians are seen positively (+25), while Pakistanis are seen negatively (-4). The amazing thing is that Indians and Pakistanis are basically the same people. The only difference is that some Indians converted to Islam during the long Muslim rule of their country and at the time of Independence, they demanded their own country as they didn’t want to live together with Hindus. And while hardly any Hindus are left in Pakistan, India did allow Muslims, who did not want to move to Pakistan, stay and their number is even increasing significantly.

So maybe there is one condition: India can never become the most hated country as long as it remains majority Hindu. (End)

This post got an amazing reaction – over 40.000 views within 24 hours, which was exceptionally high. Yet more or less from one moment to the other, the views suddenly dropped substantially, just at the time when I got a notification from Quora. A person with a Muslim name requested me to drop the last sentence of my post.

I didn’t do it, because what i had written is the truth.

A strange change is taking place in my mind. I am learning more about India and have started observing Hindu customs more sincerely off late.

  2. Being an Indian living in India, I am deeply perturbed by this business of maligning India.
A free willed woman of fifty plus, with two grown up daughters of her own, I can vouch for the sense of safety and respect we have grown up with.
Our Indian culture is one that respects and protects woman. We even have Devi, the Mother Goddess, as our very revered deity.
Rape and atrocities on women have been prevalent in all societies, across the globe. I daresay that these evils are less so in India. The difference is that Indians are more outspoken and are bringing the erstwhile hidden evil to light.
My family and I have lived in various big and small cities of India, including the National Capital Region of Delhi. And never have we felt unsafe.

I wonder why this drive to malign India. India, the oldest known civilization and culture, has never, in all history, ever attacked any other country. Yet, why do these people feel insecure?

    1. Fully agree with you. India is much safer than for example western Europe, yet the media hype had its effect. westerners feel, media must be right…
please have a look at this, too

      1. Thank you Maria. You have given the absolute correct picture.
May I share it on my Facebook page?

      2. Yes of course

There are some youngsters abroad, that include some Indians, who fall prey to this propaganda machine.

    1. Yes. Heard that some female Indian students get financial support from feminist groups

    2. Sorry, my previous comment went off too fast. Wanted to say that those students are in danger of ‘wanting to be nice’. Some were on the side of that professor.

    Hello, Dear Maria,

Excellent and honest comparison. If more Hindus had self respect and self esteem they would not depend on others to defend them. They need to unhinge from the deep colonial inferiority complex and build up theirs strength in the knowledge of indias great , grand and ancient civilizations ethos and behaving and acting as the worthy legatees of this inheritance not scampering to the West like refugees.

Maligning India is not a new agenda. It has the story to say for centuries. Now it is so hard because the opposition parties, mainly the Congres has joined hands with the enemies to score their malicious agenda, though knowing the danger. I feel shame in them. Whether BJP or Congres, doesn’t matter the common man, but nation comes first.

    1. Sometimes we Hindus should delve deep down in our acts to see if we are ourselves responsible for it. This Karnataka election 92% of Christians and 86% of Muslims voted for their candidate and only 58% of Hindus voted for theirs. Even though Modi has done nothing for Hindus but Christians are passing sermons against Modi and Mullas are issuing Fatwas against him. And presently he is the only person working hard according to constitutions. And he will loose because of Hindus and no one else

There have been lots of publicity given to a recently made BBC documentary called “India’s Daughter” by Ms. Udwin, the person who made the film and recorded an interview with Mukesh Singh in his cell awaiting an appeal for his death sentence. He is one of the six gang rapists from Delhi’s Ravi Das colony (his older brother hanged himself in his prison cell before the trial started) and all of them were given death sentence (barring one who was technically not an adult) for the horrific beating of the victim (and her male friend) and, the most brutal rape of the physiotherapy student who (along with his friend) were thrown out of the running bus onto the street after an hour of hell and without any clothes on them about 9.30 pm – the couple managed to get a ride to the hospital after 45 minutes where the gang rape victim remained in critical condition for a few days before being flown to a Singapore hospital for further surgical treatment. She fought for her life in the two hospitals in Delhi and Singapore but died in Singapore. Her body was flown back to Delhi where she was cremated by the river.
There have been much concerns and controversy in India about the final version of this documentary made by BBC. An article by the editor of First Post (see below) prompted me to do some research (into related UK news over a period of last 14 months) on the status of sexual and physical violence in England. The observations should make organisations like BBC look in the mirror and focus more on half of the 60 million England’s Daughters rather than recapitalising on the horrific incident in Delhi in December 2012 which galvanised the women’s movement, as well as that of the concerned men across the length and breadth of India with a diverse, multi lingual and multi faith population of 1.2 billion. The original and a considerably longer email, with several related pictures, video clips and in many cases, the full text of the media reporting were sent out on March 7th, 2015, to various media persons/heads in the U.K. (The Guardian, The Independent) & Canada (Toronto Star, Globe & Mail), BBC News Watch, and a few in India plus, to the Amnesty International head, and UN High Commissioner of Human Rights. To my dismay, but not unsurprisingly though, there was a complete silence from the recipients concerned. … (Continued)

Please refer to my earlier email submission (see also the word attachment 88 KB) to you for posting to “Women Under Siege” project (which I forgot to copy to Lauren Wolfe, the project director-hope the e-m address is correct.)
I am enclosing herewith the original email material in the word attachment (3 MB) which of course, is much too large a file (containing pictures and complete text in many instances) to capture as an article or a blog post for the project .
However, the new attachment would give you and your colleagues a fuller understanding of the condensed version of the material that I sent you..
Needless to say, the material is grim and a harrowing read (like many of the postings or articles in this project) and, may bear some similarity to that state of sexual and physical violence (during a similar time frame) in Canada, United States or several countries in the European Union.
